Justice in Barcelona is investigating alleged sexual assault by Brazilian defender Dani Alves. The former player of Barcelona, Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain is said to have assaulted a young woman in a nightclub in Barcelona on the night of December 30 to 31. However, the accusers are denied by Alves.

The Barcelona-based news website El Taquigrafo previously reported to have seen camera images showing how Alves entered a toilet in the nightclub alone with the woman on the night in question and left again after 47 seconds. A detailed account of the footage the news website claimed to have viewed describes the woman bursting into tears as Alves left the nightclub ten minutes later with a male friend and two female friends alerted security personnel. Then the police were called in.

A spokesperson for the Supreme Court of Catalonia has now confirmed that an investigation has been opened against Alves following a complaint by the woman. The right back, told the Spanish television channel last week Athena 3 that he was at the nightclub with other friends, but he denied groping the woman. “I was dancing and having a good time without getting in anyone’s way. I don’t know who this lady is. How could I do that to a woman?” Alves said.

Alves has been playing for the Mexican UNAM Pumas since last summer, where he has signed a one-year contract. During the World Cup in Qatar, he was part of the Brazil squad. Alves was seen by national coach Tite as an important link in the dressing room and eventually made two appearances. In the last group match against Cameroon, he played for ninety minutes. In the eighth final against South Korea, Tite called on the 39-year-old veteran for half an hour.
