Joey Veerman has not made his desired transfer in the past transfer period. There was plenty of interest for the midfielder, but sc Heerenveen turned out to be a tough negotiator. The club held on to a high asking price that no interested party was willing to meet. Kees Kwakman states that Veerman’s agent has to scratch his head now that it has not come to a step higher for his client.

Veerman was linked to various clubs in the past transfer period, including Hellas Verona, Rangers FC and AZ. Heerenveen reportedly stuck to an asking price of eight to ten million euros, an amount that none of the interested clubs wanted to put on the table. “They have every right,” Kwakman says in the ESPN-program football talk. “Veerman’s agent will really have to scratch his head. He let him sign a contract, without a clause. Then these are the consequences.”

Kwakman believes that Veerman is ready for a step up. “He just has to play at a higher level. It is a shame that he cannot play at a better club, because you really want to see him at a higher level,” said the former football player of NAC Breda, FC Augsburg and FC Groningen. “Everyone has their doubts about how he was going to do, mentally and things like that. That’s what we want to see now; what happens if he starts playing in midfield at AZ or PSV?”

AZ made an offer for Veerman in the closing days of the transfer window. The player said that it was an amount of 4 or 4.5 million euros. Heerenveen did not give in. “It’s not sad,” says Kwakman. “Joey just has a good salary, but it’s a shame he can’t play at a better club. We want to see if he can handle it.” The contract of 22-year-old Veerman in Friesland will continue until mid-2024.
