Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink will join England’s coaching staff, it has been reported Sky Sports Wednesday evening via Twitter. The fifty-year-old former international of the Dutch national team will replace Chris Powell as assistant national coach of Gareth Southgate. Hasselbaink has been without an employer since September when he stepped down as manager of Burton Albion in League One. Now a wonderful new adventure beckons in the country where he once made waves as a striker for Chelsea, Middlesbrough and Leeds United, among others.

According to Sky Sports the choice of Hasselbaink fits within the policy of the English Football Association, which wants to increase diversity within the organization. The FA does this, among other things, by giving more chances. Ex-pros such as Ashley Cole, Joleon Lescott and Michael Johnson play an important role in England’s U23 team. Hasselbaink himself was active in England as a manager at Queen’s Park Rangers, Northampton and Burton (two terms). As an assistant he has experience at Nottingham Forest.

Bee the Three Lions Hasselbaink will succeed Powell, who was briefly assistant coach to Alan Pardew at ADO Den Haag between 2019 and 2020. Powell ran out of contract after the World Cup in Qatar, and now wants to focus on his job as director of Tottenham Hotspur’s youth academy. After informing Southgate, the English national coach threw a ball at Hasselbaink, who likes the position.

The 23-time international of the Dutch (nine goals) is extremely popular with many English people. For example, he has a great track record with the supporters of Chelsea. The right leg, born in Paramaribo, played for the London club between 2000 and 2004, where he was brought in as a record transfer (24 million euros) at the time. In 177 games for the Blues Hasselbaink was good for 87 goals and 24 assists. It is not yet known for what term he will sign with the FA, Southgate is still fixed until December 2024.
