Jasper Cillessen will most likely return to NEC after eleven years. Multiple sources confirm this Broadcasting Gelderland. The 33-year-old goalkeeper has been told by Valencia that he can leave and is reportedly in the picture at the club where he made his breakthrough as a professional in 2010.
Cillessen was recently in the picture to become PSV’s first keeper, but the Eindhoven team already picked up Walter Benítez at OGC Nice. Later he was also linked to his former club Ajax. According to Spanish media, Cillessen is now actually on his way to NEC. Trainer Rogier Meier currently has goalkeepers Mattijs Branderhorst, Danny Vukovic and Robin Roefs with the Nijmegen team.
Cillessen, together with Gonçalo Guedes and Maxi Gómez, is one of the big earners at Valencia and would therefore not be included in the selection for the exhibition game with Nottingham Forest (1-1). A departure from Cillessen would loose Che therefore mean that new players can be enrolled in LaLiga. A departure from Cillessen has been in the air for a long time. Last season, the 63-time international saw little action, especially in the second half of the season. That was partly due to injuries, but also because Giorgi Mamardashvili was preferred over Cillessen for the lion’s share of the duels.
With the World Cup in Qatar approaching, it will be important for the goalkeeper to get to play. In the past two years, the ex-keeper of Barcelona, Ajax and NEC played only seven international matches. That too was partly due to injuries and a corona infection, but the goalkeeper was also not selected or drafted a number of times.
