Owen Wijndal has again suffered an ankle injury against Rangers (1-3 win). The left back of Ajax had been out of action for months this season with an injury to the exact same joint, he explains afterwards. RTL 7. “It is slightly less painful than just now, but of course I am very disappointed that I had to leave,” said the wing defender who came over from AZ.

Wijndal started in the starting line-up for the first time since August and immediately delivered a good assist to Mohammed Kudus. Just before half time, Wijndal was injured. “I had to head the ball on the back line and I got a push,” explains the left back. “It’s very steep down there.” Wijndal ended up in ‘the gutter’ that surrounds the field on Ibrox. “It was that ankle again with which I have been out for a long time. That ankle folded double. Then you immediately feel that it has to come out.”

It remains to be seen how serious the injury is, but Wijndal is optimistic. “It’s thick now. We’ve been icing a lot, so I hope the swelling goes away soon. How serious is it? Tomorrow we’re going to make a scan, then I’ll know more. Of course I’ve been out for a long time recently. It feels less bad now than then. That gives a good feeling, but we have to wait for the scan. Unfortunately, it is part of it. It is sour.”

Wijndal was preferred over Daley Blind and was asked how far he was from a fixed starting spot. “I was in the starting line-up today, right?” he winks. “Over a longer period? That depends on how I play. I think it is normal at a club like Ajax. Nobody is sure of a starting place. You just have to play well. It is very difficult to play out blind, you have seen that “It just took a long time. He is an international, a very good player. If you get the chance you have to show it. I think it went well, only then this happens…”
