Sparta Rotterdam captain Adil Auassar called some of his teammates ‘drowsy’ after they lost 1-0 to RKC Waalwijk on Saturday evening. Just before time, RKC striker Michiel Kramer signed for the only goal of the game. Auassar bit into conversation with ESPN initially still on his tongue, but then let his thoughts run wild.

Sparta only collected seven points this season and can use every point to get away from seventeenth place. Auassar was very disappointed when Kramer scored the winning goal in the 89th minute on behalf of RKC, which comes to ten points due to the victory and rises to twelfth place in the Eredivisie ranking. “I think I’d better keep that to myself,” the Sparta midfielder responded afterwards when asked about his reaction.

Not long after, Auassar spoke out firmly: “It’s just bad. I think you are the parent. We press the whole game, get enough chances and they almost don’t shoot on target in my opinion. If you run into it like that…”, said Auassar, who then spoke about a number of teammates. “I see a few walking around with us, a few idiots. I don’t know what’s wrong with them. Isn’t it a shame if you lose to RKC today, with all due respect?”

“Often if you achieve lesser results or are lower in the rankings, these kinds of statements are viewed more negatively,” said Sparta trainer Henk Fraser in response to his captain’s words. “But I do think that we should correct each other more sharply, even in good times. Now it’s a bit heavier. There is also a lot of emotion, but I am happy with it. Otherwise it would be completely boring.”
