Giovanni van Bronckhorst and Rangers suffered another blow on Sunday. After the 1-3 defeat against Ajax last Tuesday, St. Johnstone was also too strong for the number two in Scotland: it became 2-1 at McDiarmid Park. This puts Rangers behind leaders Celtic to seven points, and Van Bronckhorst’s position is increasingly being discussed. The coach ‘has been under pressure for several weeks’, he says afterwards.

Tuesday’s Champions League defeat gave Rangers and Van Bronckhorst a sad record. With a goal difference of 2-22 and zero points, the Light Blues the worst multi-billion dollar contestant ever. In the league, however, Rangers fared a lot better: the club had been unbeaten since September 3, when they lost 4-0 to Celtic. That series came to an end on Sunday.

Goals from James Brown (minute 41) and Nick Clark (minute 62) gave St. Johnstone a 2-0 lead, before James Tavernier scored the connecting goal fifteen minutes before the end, but it came too late for Van Bronckhorst and co. “The series of the last few weeks is unacceptable,” the former left back said to the Scottish branch of the BBC. “We always have to be perfect, there are no excuses. Am I under pressure? That’s been the case for a few weeks. But we have to move on.”
