Andreas Christensen will not be there on April 5 when Barcelona takes on Real Madrid in the semifinals of the Copa del Rey, various Spanish media report. The defender did not come unscathed from Denmark’s European Championship qualifying match with Finland (3-1) on Thursday evening and will be out of circulation for at least three to four weeks. Christensen had to stop the fight after more than fifteen minutes.

It’s every coach’s fear. Loaning players to their country and getting them back injured. This international period cannot be avoided either. On Thursday evening, Christensen had to be replaced after fifteen minutes in the home game against Finland. Now the central defender appears to have sustained an injury to his calf, which will keep him sidelined for several weeks. Christensen therefore misses, among other things, the next Clásico, which is scheduled for April 5.

The Danish international will travel back to Barcelona on Friday to receive further treatment from the Barcelona medical staff. New tests should reveal the exact severity of the muscle tear, but it is certain that the cup match against Real Madrid will come too early for Christensen. He will also miss next Saturday’s league match against Elche and the meeting with Girona (April 10). The question is whether he will be available again on April 16 against Getafe.

Christensen’s retirement was one of the few adverse factors for the Danish team. The team of national coach Kasper Hjulmand had little trouble with the Finns at the Parken Stadium in Copenhagen and triumphed 3-1 with a hat-trick from Rasmus Höjlund. The Atalanta striker, who turned 20 last month, is regarded as the ‘new Erling Braut Haaland’. After three international matches, he has three goals. The Danes will take on Kazakhstan on Sunday.
