Sadio Mané definitely misses the first group match with the Dutch national team. On Friday it was announced that the star player of Senegal belongs to the 26-man selection of national coach Aliou Cissé, despite an injury. The Senegalese football association says that Mane will in any case miss ‘the first World Cup matches’.

“We have to tell the Senegalese the truth, Sadio is injured,” said Abdoulaye Sow on behalf of the Senegalese Football Association. “We will have to play the first games without Sadio and win without Sadio. Sadio is an important player in this team, but we have to deal with it.”

Mané was injured last Tuesday during Bayern Munich’s 6-1 league match against Werder Bremen. Where Bayern, through assistant coach Dino Toppmöller, announced that the World Cup would not be endangered for the former Liverpool attacker, it was later confirmed by L’Equipe announced that Mane would not be there in Qatar. However, the Senegalese association is counting on the Bayern Munich attacker to still be able to make minutes at the World Cup.

The meeting with the the Dutch is scheduled for Monday, November 21, followed by meetings with Qatar and Ecuador for Senegal. Mané guided his country to its first African Cup win earlier this year and was decisive in the play-offs against Egypt. The absence of the attacker against the the Dutch is therefore a major blow to Senegal.
