Mike Verweij thinks it is an unwise choice by Joey Kooij to approve Guus Til’s second goal for Feyenoord against NEC (5-3). The journalist of The Telegraph states that Kooij went against the guidelines from the KNVB by awarding a goal after viewing the images on the sidelines. Verweij thinks that Kooij was ‘too shitty’ to reject the goal in a swirling Kuip.

Before the questionable goal, Bryan Linssen put a block against Cas Odenthal, after which the ball rolled over for Til, who shot him in. Kooij was called to the sidelines by Siemen Mulder, the VAR on duty, to watch the goal again. The referee decided to let the goal stand. Verweij is in the podcast Kick off of his newspaper very critical of that decision.

“He is of course Frank de Boer’s son-in-law, a huge Ajax and AZ stamp,” says Verweij about Kooij. “That is why he is also the brother-in-law of Calvin Stengs, the other son-in-law of Frank de Boer. Joey Kooij just does not dare to reject this goal, while the policy line in Zeist is simply: if you are called to the side by the VAR , then you follow that VAR. You don’t have to, but then you have to be one hundred percent sure. This was just a violation, but that Joey Kooij was way too shitty to disallow this goal.”

“This was an ideal moment for him to shake off his Ajax and AZ stamp and to award Feyenoord that goal,” said Verweij. “Super nice that Feyenoord is participating for the title, that’s not all about that, but this was of course really because of De Kuip. If it had been in Nijmegen, he would have simply rejected it.” Verweij acknowledges that it was not a major violation. “Then the VAR should not have called him, I would have had no problems with that either. But if you are called to the side, it is very common that you reject him.”

According to Verweij, the fact that a VAR calls an arbitrator to the sidelines should already be a sign on the wall. “It must be a clear and obvious mistake then a VAR calls you to the side. So that VAR was convinced that Joey Kooij was a clear and obvious mistake had made. Then the line is in Zeist: in principle you go along with the VAR. Because he can watch him twenty times in that studio in Zeist, so you just reject him.”
