Memphis Depay has publicly recorded for national coach Ronald Koeman. The 29-year-old attacker of Atlético Madrid thinks the way in which the sixty-year-old had to leave Barcelona is ‘not okay’. Koeman brought Memphis to Barcelona in the summer of 2021 and received his congé a few months later. The star player of the Dutch national team closed the door behind himself in the Spotify Camp Nou last winter.

Talking to it General Journal Memphis looks back on Koeman’s dismissal at Barça. “The way Ronald has been treated at Barcelona is not okay. I really don’t respect that. Koeman is a trainer with class and a fantastic person. He certainly didn’t deserve this.” Memphis played a total of 42 official games for the Catalans, in which he scored fourteen goals and two assists.

On January 20 of this year, Memphis signed with Atlético, so that the adventure in Barcelona ended with a fizzle. In his last period, Memphis had to make do with a role as a reserve player. “Of course it was a disappointment, but disappointment is part of it. In football you just keep going. Sometimes things move very fast, I barely had time to move, but I feel fitter in Madrid and I’m playing more and more.” In the Spanish capital, Memphis is fixed until mid-2025.

The fact that Memphis is getting fitter has to do with Diego Simeone’s working method. “I need a certain kind of training to be in an optimal state physically. That didn’t always go well at Barcelona, but it did at Atlético. The way of working suits me perfectly. You can imagine how things are under Diego Simeone: he wants everything fully, with a lot of passion. Everything makes me stronger.” In his first eight games for Athletics Memphis was good for three goals.
