Manchester United could have bought Erling Braut Haaland from Molde FK for just four million euros in the past. That reveals Ole Gunnar Solskjaer opposite The Athletic. Solskjaer experienced Haaland up close as coach of Molde and tipped Manchester United in 2017 to recruit his pupil.

Solskjaer’s tip never got through the Red Devils done. Haaland eventually left for RB Salzburg and ended up at Manchester City via Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2022. “I remember contacting Manchester United. I did that because we had a very talented striker who I thought they could use,” explains Solskjaer. “That was six months before I started working at United myself.”

“They didn’t listen to me, unfortunately,” says Solskjaer. Haaland, this season good for 51 hits in 48 official matches, has according to Transfer market currently a market value of no less than one hundred and seventy million euros. United was able to pick up the Norwegian goal machine for a pittance at the time. “Four million. That was our asking price. Only they decided not to take him. Four million!” said Solskjaer.

Haaland was voted Player of the Year in the Premier League by the British press on Friday. The striker received an overwhelming 82 percent of the vote (a record) and thus amply trumped numbers two and three Bukayo Saka and Martin Ødegaard. It is only the fourth time in Premier League history that someone has won the election in his debut season. Haaland shot sharply from minute one and is on 35 goals after 32 league games. In his debut year, he immediately established himself as the one with the most Premier League goals ever in one season. With four games to go, he can also increase his total slightly.
