Christian Gyan has responded via Facebook to the news that he is terminally ill. It General Newspaper released Tuesday that the 43-year-old Ghanaian suffers from cancer and that his former employer Feyenoord hopes to be able to give him a dignified farewell. Gyan insists that he is well and that he is not dying.

“Good evening friends,” Gyan begins his Facebook post. “There is news about my current situation, without my consent. As everyone knows, I have been sick for a while. But I feel okay and I am NOT dying. So please, there is no need to panic. I respect the doctors, but you know me: I am a man of faith. That’s why I believe things will get better.”

Gyan – as we know deeply religious – quotes a biblical text. “What is impossible from a human perspective is possible with God,” the former defender quotes. “So please pray that I will recover. Thank you my friends.” It General Newspaper wrote that at Feyenoord there is intense sympathy for Gyan. The crowd favorite played in South Rotterdam between 1996 and 2007 and won, among other things, a national championship, a Johan Cruijff Scale and a UEFA Cup.

After his career, Gyan suffered several setbacks. Due to a heavy debt load, the costs of a seriously ill son and his generosity, he got into financial difficulties. Seizures forced Gyan to stop working as well. Also in the program football talk by ESPN Gyan was the subject of discussion on Tuesday evening. “He is very sweet, he has an eye for everyone,” said Mario Been, who worked with him at Feyenoord. “He was a fantastic back, with a lot of speed. In the UEFA Cup final he was excellent, but he has played more good matches. This scares me.”
