Roger Schmidt hopes for a longer stay for Mario Götze at PSV. The attacking midfielder signed a contract for two seasons last year and created high expectations with his arrival. Partly due to injuries, Götze has only made minutes in 17 of the 33 league games this season and Schmidt hopes that his fellow countryman will remain fit next season, and thus be able to play a leading role at PSV.

The 63-time international of Germany was absent from PSV in the last two league games, but trained with the group again on Friday and seems to be able to come into action in the final game with FC Utrecht. If it were up to Schmidt, it will not be Götze’s last appearance for PSV. “I feel that Mario is feeling good here. Due to a few injuries, his season did not go quite as we might have wanted. Next year he can play an even better leading role, I expect, if that does not happen,” he says. the weekly press conference.

PSV can actually only miss the second place in the Eredivisie in theory. In principle, the people from Eindhoven will start in the second heat of the Champions League, so that the season would already start on 20 or 21 July. However, if Manchester United win the Europa League final, PSV may skip the second round and the club will start on 3 or 4 August. Schmidt realizes that the summer holidays will be short anyway and hopes to put together a good squad for the new season as soon as possible, although he realizes that it could be difficult.

“The build-up of the team will soon start again in order to be able to get off to a good start in the preparation for the next season. Practice always shows that it never quite works to have all the decisions taken”, Schmidt said. . “In Leverkusen I experienced that we qualified for the group stage of the Champions League and that new players came after that. If we take second place on Sunday, we have a nice European route to offer players.”
