Robin Gosens missed the chance to sign a very lucrative contract with Newcastle United in January, confirms the brand new acquisition of Internazionale in kicker. Gosens became part of a bidding game between the two mentioned clubs and decided to favor the sporting aspect on his departure from Atalanta. “But it is human to think about the other offer as well,” says the 27-year-old left wing defender.
Newcastle United’s new project is in its infancy and Gosens had doubts in the sporting field. “But if you can earn multiples for the same job in a different location, then you don’t just say ‘no, thanks’,” said the German international, who indicates that the very rich English club wanted to go very far. “It’s not just about me, I could probably have secured the financial future of a few more generations of my family with this money.”
It was only in the absolute final phase that Inter presented itself as an interested party. The reigning champions of Italy accelerated the operation and brought in Gosens as a rental player, with a mandatory option to buy of around 25 million euros plus bonuses. Gosens did not have to think twice about a club like Inter. “In football, opportunities sometimes arise that you simply cannot pass up,” Gosens said during his presentation. “Inter is one such opportunity.”
Gosens believes no one can blame him in Bergamo for his domestic move. “Atalanta paid me about a million euros (in 2017 to Heracles Almelo, ed.), now the club gets a considerable amount for me. It is a win-win situation.” Gosens is currently recovering from a serious hamstring injury and is therefore still waiting for his debut for Inter.
