Wout Weghorst has not endeared himself to Manchester United supporters. The spire of the Mancunians has pleaded guilty to ‘sacrilege’ ahead of the away game against Liverpool (7-0) by tapping twice on the famous sign above the players’ tunnel at Anfield. Images of this have been released by the Liverpool club channel, which has sparked a storm of criticism.

Weghorst came over from Burnley on a rental basis last winter. In an interview in The Telegraph in 2018, however, Weghorst revealed that he has been a fan of Liverpool from an early age, the arch-rival who dealt an unprecedented blow to manager Erik ten Hag’s team last Sunday. Weghorst described a future move to Anfield as an ‘ultimate dream’ at the time and said with hard work and determination one day for the Reds to want to come out.

Weghorst’s dream partly came true on Sunday when he made his appearance at Anfield. However, the United striker went down hard and came under even more fire afterwards. Images from the Liverpool club channel show how Weghorst taps twice on the ‘This is Anfield’ sign that hangs above the players’ tunnel. It is customary for Liverpool players to touch the backboard as a sign of respect and superstition before taking the field. Players from visiting clubs must not touch the backboard.

Furious United fans claim Weghorst should end his contract. “I don’t care about his pictures of the EFL Cup anymore,” writes an angry supporter. “He has to leave the club at the end of the season. This video is enough to let him go. How the hell can you touch the Anfield board as a MAN UNITED player?” Another writes that Weghorst’s action was ‘the beginning of ten against twelve’. Weghorst started in the base against Liverpool, but was taken aside by Ten Hag after less than an hour. United were already 3-0 behind at the time.
