Michael de Leeuw will return to the old nest with Willem II, it assures Brabants Dagblad. The 35-year-old FC Groningen attacker has managed to convince his family of a switch to Tilburg with great difficulty and was spotted on the train on Wednesday by an observant follower. “Michael de Leeuw is literally on his way from FC Groningen to Willem II,” said Max Pijnenburg on Twitter. “Now sit with him on the train to Tilburg.”

De Leeuw wanted to fight for his chance at FC Groningen this summer, but gradually found out in a quite painful way that Frank Wormuth does not see it in him. The German trainer, arrived this summer at the pride of the north left the veteran out of the match selection for the season overture in the Eredivisie against FC Volendam (2-2). De Leeuw then lashed out at his employer.

“I never expected that I would be the one who would be excluded from the selection,” De Leeuw said to The Telegraph. “At the same time, the signal could not be clearer. I can leave. It is a confirmation of what I felt was coming. I have little perspective at Wormuth. In the preparation I only played sixty minutes once and only half matches. I already felt that the trainer was not really trying to get me completely fit and already had the idea that I was not in his plans.”

Willem II, who is determined to immediately be promoted back to the Eredivisie, reached an agreement with FC Groningen about the takeover of De Leeuw without any problems. The attacker, who was born near Tilburg in Goirle, immediately saw a return to the old nest, but his family initially did not want to make the crossing to North Brabant. Now De Leeuw returns to the club, where he played in the U23 team for two years from 2007, but never in the first. The attacker scored five goals in 33 appearances for Groningen last season, which snatched him away from Emmen last year, which was then relegated.
