Heung-min Son needs surgery on the area around his eye, his club Tottenham Hotspur reported via the official channels. The South Korean collided hard with Chancel Mbemba in the Champions League match against Olympique Marseille. Reports a day later the Spurs that surgery is necessary because the fracture around his eye needs to be stabilized.

“After his surgery, Son will begin his rehabilitation with our medical staff and we will provide further updates in due course,” Tottenham wrote. Son’s injury is a hard blow for both his club and South Korea. At Tottenham, the attacker forms a dangerous duo with Harry Kane, while Son is the absolute star player of his country. Tottenham has not yet reported how much time it will take for his recovery.

After the won game in the south of France, assistant coach Cristian Stellini gave a brief update on Son in the absence of the suspended Antonio Conte. “At the moment we don’t know and we have to wait for the medical assessment. We have to wait for tomorrow. Son is feeling better. I saw him in the dressing room and there he partied with us. We will have to wait for tomorrow.”

Now that it appears that Son has to go under the knife, participation in the World Cup has suddenly become uncertain. The attacker, who is also captain of his country, would face Uruguay, Portugal and Ghana in the global final tournament. Playing with a mask could also be a possibility for the thirty-year-old attacker.
