Fortuna Sittard’s relegation worries have become a bit bigger again. The Limburgers still had the prospect of a positive result halfway through the home game with Heracles Almelo, who wins for the first time in more than a year, but after ninety minutes the low flyer was again empty-handed. Fortuna drops to seventeenth place due to the defeat and the 1-1 draw of Sparta Rotterdam against sc Heerenveen, which means relegation from the Eredivisie at the end of the season.

The first half in Sittard was not really full of quality. Sinan Bakis tried in minute 8 with a free kick of approximately 25 meters, but he was unable to surprise Fortuna goalkeeper Yanick van Osch. On the other hand, Mats Seuntjens created the first danger for the home team after more than fifteen minutes of play. Closing post Koen Bucker of Heracles made a skilful save. In the final phase of the not very exciting first half, Bakis was again stopped by Van Osch and Anas Ouahim headed wide in a promising position.

Five minutes after the restart in Sittard, Zian Flemming missed a great opportunity to open the score. Justin Hoogma defused his shot with his head just in time. Just six minutes later, Flemming warned Heracles again, after a good cross by Charlison Benschop. It was Bucker who prevented the visitors from having to face a deficit. With almost an hour of play on the clock, Heracles broke the spell. The left back Giacomo Quagliata, who came along, saw his shot disappear into the goal under Van Osch: 0-1. The fullback was visibly relieved and happy with his goal.

There was no quick equalizer, because after 64 minutes of play, the outstanding Bucker made a very nice save on a bet by Seuntjens. It cost Fortuna dearly, as just two minutes later Bakis doubled Heracles’ lead. The attacker finished coolly after a cross pass from Emil Hansson. With twenty minutes left on the clock, the impassable Bucker also stopped Paul Gladon from scoring, while Bakis hit the post shortly afterwards. Heracles rises to thirteenth place thanks to the first away win since March 13, 2021. Fortuna is relegated with seven rounds left in the Eredivisie.
