Luciano Spalletti has high hopes for Victor Osimhen. The Nigerian attacker of Napoli has already scored nine goals in twelve official games this season. According to his trainer, Osimhen has what it takes to reach the level of George Weah and Marco van Basten.

“He is comparable to Weah, although he is probably not as strong technically. But he has the same qualities. He also reminds me of Van Basten. Osimhen is still young and can eventually reach that level,” said Italian media from Spalletti. Both Weah and Van Basten caused a furore at AC Milan. Van Basten did that between 1987 and 1995, while Weah played in Milan between 1995 and 2000.

The 22-year-old Osimhen came to Napoli last summer via the Ultimate Strikers Academy, VfL Wolfsburg, Charleroi and Lille OSC, after more than seventy million euros was paid for him. Last season, the nineteen-time Nigerian international scored ten times in thirty official matches, but this year he has already scored nine goals in twelve matches. Partly because of this, Napoli currently leads the Serie A, along with AC Milan.

“Everyone expects us to stay at this level, so do we,” Spalletti said. “We want to stay in the lead, but I can’t guarantee anything. There is still room for improvement, we have to be consistent. Next Sunday (against Hellas Verona, ed.) Kalidou Koulibaly will be suspended, but we have enough good players who can absorb his absence. Every game we don’t win is a missed opportunity. We will see if we are stronger than the other teams.”
