Alfred Schreuder was officially presented on Wednesday as the new coach of Ajax. In his first interview, the 49-year-old coach provides an update on possible incoming and outgoing transfers from the club. In addition, Schreuder expresses a towering ambition.

“Everyone knows by now that Nicolás Tagliafico could possibly leave,” says Schreuder on Ajax’s own club channels. “When he leaves, we have to look at what we already have and what could strengthen us. We also have Daley Blind in that position, but he can play in more positions. We also need healthy competition, so the left-back would be a position we can strengthen.”

The right back position is also still a matter of doubt for Schreuder. “We can still look at right back, but we now also have Devyne Rensch running there and we just have to have faith in that.” Outbound transfers is also something Schreuder always takes into account. “That is always part of it, that’s what Ajax is for. It is important to be patient and to rely on people’s craftsmanship. Professionals work everywhere within Ajax.” However, the coach has been very clear to the club management in a number of positions. “There are real players in this selection that we are absolutely not going to sell.”

Moreover, Schreuder is not lacking in ambition. The brand new head coach of Ajax not only wants to win the Johan Cruijff Scale, the championship and the KNVB cup, but has also set the goal of winning the Champions League. “Without being arrogant, but you should always have the ambition to strive for the highest. I myself have the ambition to win the Champions League one day. Ajax has done that in the past and we were there three years ago very close.”
