Ryan Gravenberch has a chance to win the Kopa Trophy this year France Football announced Friday evening. The trophy is awarded every year to the greatest talent under the age of 21. However, the brand new Bayern Munich midfielder has some formidable competitors for actually winning the award.

In the battle for the trophy, Gravenberch will face just two defenders, Josko Gvardiol (RB Leipzig) and Nuno Mendes (Paris Saint-Germain). Especially in his own line, in midfield, Gravenberch finds many feared competitors. With Jude Bellingham (Borussia Dortmund), Eduardo Camavinga (Real Madrid), Gavi (Barcelona), Jamal Musiala (Bayern Munich) and Florian Wirtz (Bayer Leverkusen), he has competitors who have already shown it at the very highest level. Also in the vanguard, only two players were nominated this year. Bukayo Saka (Arsenal) and Karim Adeyemi (Borussia Dortmund) have a chance to win the coveted trophy.

Last season, Gravenberch was also nominated for the trophy, but due to his strong season at Ajax, Gravenberch is now eligible again. The prize has been awarded since 2018. In the past, one Dutchman won the Kopa Trophy, in the name of Matthijs de Ligt in 2019. A year earlier, Justin Kluivert finished in third place behind Kylian Mbappé. In the most recent edition, Barcelona midfielder Pedri took the prize.

Twenty-year-old Gravenberch started his new adventure in Munich in July. The Germans took over the midfielder from Ajax for a fixed transfer fee of 18.5 million euros, while that amount can still increase through bonuses. Although his direct competitor Leon Goretzka is injured, Gravenberch has had to make do with two substitutes at Bayern so far. In total, he came to 55 official minutes for the club so far. On Sunday afternoon, Bayern will take on VfL Wolfsburg in a home game.
