Go Ahead Eagles says goodbye to Nick Hengelman. The 32-year-old goalkeeper leaves Deventer after five months without playing minutes. Andries Noppert, who left for SC Heerenveen, was preferred over Hengelman in these months. Via Instagram, the closing post nevertheless says goodbye to his old employer with a smile.

Hengelman puts his argument in a nicely formatted message. “Go Ahead Eagles, after years of flirting we finally gave each other that kiss. It would stay with that kiss and we never shared the bed. Today we say goodbye to each other. And maybe the fantasy is better than it. Go Ahead Eagles, it was a pretty short time. Best wishes. Love Nick.” Like its followers, the club appreciates the message. “Thanks for your nest warmth, Nick!”

In April 2021, Hengelman posted another playful message on his Instagram. After he received his letter of resignation from Ajax, he placed it on the medium. “Whether I also received a letter of resignation? Yes, one of the many again. Do we mind? No, a standard procedure according to the collective labor agreement for professional football. I would like to show it to you. And now? I have both scenarios We’ve experienced it before. Either we sign a new contract with the same club, or we sign a contract with a new club. What scenario it will be this year, we’ll see…” Then he left for Bulgaria for an adventure with Pirin Blagoevgrad.

It has been eight years since Hengelman kept more than twenty matches in a season. The goalkeeper has often had to settle for a role as second or third goalkeeper. In the Netherlands he kept official matches for TOP OSS, Achilles’29 and AGOVV. Abroad, in addition to nine matches for Pirin Blagoevgrad, he also played five matches for Ajax Cape Town. Partly because of this, Hengelman was given the opportunity to train with Jong Ajax during the pandemic. That was contractually laid down by Edwin van der Sar.
