Max Eberl announced his departure from Borussia Mönchengladbach in a specially scheduled press conference on Friday. The 48-year-old technical director of that Fohlen is in his own words ‘out’ and wants nothing more to do with the football world. Eberl, who was overcome with tears while making his announcement, says goodbye to ‘his’ Borussia Mönchengladbach after 23 years. Since 1999 he was active first as a player and then as a director at the club.

Rumors of Eberl’s departure began earlier this week. Borussia Mönchengladbach is currently in a disappointing twelfth place in the Bundesliga, just three points clear of the relegation zone. Trainer Adi Hütter and Eberl came under considerable fire from their own supporters due to the sporting crisis. That is why team manager Sabrina Schaller left the club two weeks earlier, which made an exit from Eberl a lot more likely.

Gladbach himself wanted to keep Eberl for the club, but he couldn’t, he said emotionally. “I don’t have the strength to do this job anymore. I’m up, I’m tired… I have to look after my own health. I just want to leave, I don’t want anything to do with football anymore. I want to see the world , I want to have fun, I want to be Max Eberl.” The German protects himself with his choice, he says. “There is no 99 percent with me. I just want to give the full 100 percent.”

Eberl concluded his professional career with Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2005, before taking charge of the club’s youth and amateur arm. In 2008 he took up the position of technical director. Eberl made Mönchengladbach a serious candidate for European football, while the club always finished in the right-hand row of the Bundesliga at the time of his entrance. Under his wing, Gladbach has qualified six times for European football, including three times for the Champions League. Each of the past ten seasons, Gladbach has finished in the left row.
