Georginio Wijnaldum is definitely on his way to the exit at Paris Saint-Germain. GOAL announces Friday that the 31-year-old midfielder is transferring to AS Roma on a rental basis, which wants to complete the transfer this weekend. The Italian club has also negotiated a purchase option of between ten and fifteen million euros. Roma cannot cough up Wijnaldum’s annual salary of nine million euros, so PSG will take care of half of that next season. The veteran is still in Paris until mid-2024, but his future seems to be definitely outside the French capital.

PSG has been in the stomach with Wijnaldum for a while, because the midfielder earns one of the highest salaries in Ligue 1 but at the same time no longer has a future in the Parc des Princes. The two parties had already agreed that an outgoing transfer should be realized as soon as possible and PSG is therefore willing to cooperate with a loan to Roma. Of course, the French club Wijnaldum would prefer to sell, but the club management realizes that other clubs prefer to rent in the context of cost savings.

Roma has often been linked to the the Dutch international in recent days. Wijnaldum himself would have indicated that he would like to work under coach José Mourinho in the Italian capital and i Giallorossi see the ideal reinforcement in the midfielder. The Romans already struck a blow earlier this week by taking over attacker Paulo Dybala, who was also mentioned at Internazionale, on a free transfer from Juventus.

It Eindhovens Dagblad wrote on Friday morning that PSV’s interest in Wijnaldum is still there. Technical director John de Jong of the Eindhoven team previously stated that PSV would not be able to cough up Wijnaldum’s salary, although this could be discussed during negotiations. However, it now seems that PSV is definitely missing the midfielder. Wijnaldum came over from Liverpool on a free transfer a year ago and signed a contract for three seasons with PSG, until mid-2024. Transfermarkt currently values the midfielder, who was active for PSV between 2011 and 2015, at eighteen million euros.
