Barcelona booked a spectacular win in LaLiga on Sunday evening. On a visit to Villarreal, coach Xavi’s team was 3-4 too strong. It seemed to be an easy afternoon when Gavi and Frenkie de Jong had given their team a 0-2 lead after fifteen minutes of play, but an impressive comeback put them el Submarino Amarillo shortly after the break suddenly led 3-2. In the end, the Catalans won the game thanks to hits from Ferran Torres and Robert Lewandowski.

After an unfortunate opening phase by Barcelona, Gavi pointed the right way in the twelfth minute of play. Lamine Yamal had an excellent cross from the right flank to Gavi, who was able to nod in from close range: 0-1. With his assist, the right winger (16 years and 45 days) became the youngest player ever with an assist in LaLiga. Yamal took over Ansu Fati’s record from 2019: the latter prepared a goal when he was 16 years and 318 days old.

The 0-2 fell a few minutes after the opening goal. De Jong set up an attack himself and got the ball back at his feet on the edge of the sixteen-meter area, after which he coolly found the bottom left corner. Villarreal’s comeback started from the 26th minute of play. Juan Foyth first scored on a pass from Alex Baena, while Alexander Sörloth nicely scored the 2-2 five minutes before the break. The Norwegian striker scored after wonderful combination football from Villarreal.

A few minutes after the restart, the home team even took the lead. After an excellent dribble, Alfonso Pedraza served Baena on the left side of the sixteen-meter area, who curled the ball into the right corner with the inside right: 3-2. Twenty minutes before the final whistle, substitute Ferran Torres leveled the score again. After his first shot was blocked by Jorge Cuenca, he did manage to score from the rebound: 3-3. Three minutes later, Barcelona regained the lead. Lewandowski was in the right place to finish after Yamal hit the post: 3-4. Shortly before that, the sixteen-year-old top talent also crossed the line.

In the remainder of the game, both teams were still emphatically looking for a new goal, but partly due to the lack of sharpness in the completion of Lewandowski, Ansu Fati and Sörloth, it was no longer found.
