Former Barcelona defender Douglas Pereira is in trouble. The 32-year-old defender, who is currently without a club, is said to have been involved in a shooting incident in a Brazilian parking lot. According to Globo Esporte he was arrested for illegal possession and firing a firearm. He is now charged with both counts. Douglas Pereira was under contract with the Catalans between 2014 and 2019.

The shooting incident took place on April 21 at Lake Paranoá in the capital Brasília. Douglas was in a speedboat and was asked to leave after getting into an argument with other occupants. The defender was under the influence of alcohol and then left for a nearby parking lot of the Club Esportives Sul sports complex. Security would have asked him to leave the site after he ‘aggressively’ confronted several people. He then fired an illegal firearm into the air. The gun, which has not been found, is said to have been hidden in a forest.

Douglas was subsequently arrested and paroled on April 23 after a hearing. The Brasília public prosecutor’s office has now filed charges against him. If the court allows the lawsuit, the defender will be tried. Douglas was labeled a ‘ghost transfer’ at Barcelona, after he came over from São Paulo for four million euros in 2014. He was under contract there for five seasons, but played fewer games (7) than he won titles (8). After several loan spells, including to Benfica and Sivasspor, he moved to Besiktas in 2019. The right back has been without a club since last summer.
