The Feyenoord supporter who threw a lighter on the back of the head of Ajax midfielder Davy Klaassen in April was sentenced by the police judge in Dordrecht on Monday. The 32-year-old man from Roelofarendsveen will receive a community service order of sixty hours for the assault, of which thirty hours will be suspended with a probationary period of two years.

Klaassen was hit by the lighter around the sixtieth minute in the semi-final of the TOTO KNVB Cup between Feyenoord and Ajax. The supporter was clearly on camera images and also admitted to have thrown the object. The man is a fanatical supporter of Feyenoord with a clean criminal record so far. He has been given a two-year nationwide stadium ban.

The lighter incident was a turning point in the debate about increasing fan violence. A day after the cup match, the KNVB came up with a strict protocol regarding disturbances during matches in professional football. As a result, countless duels have been temporarily or even permanently suspended in recent weeks. One of the low points was the meeting between FC Groningen and Ajax on Sunday, which was deliberately sabotaged by throwing smoke bombs on the field twice.
