Bruno Fernandes has been voted Best Player of the Season 2019/20 by the supporters of Manchester United. The Portuguese playmaker will receive the Sir Matt Busby Award, a prize named after the legendary former manager of the Red Devils. Fernandes stayed ahead of Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford, number two and three, respectively.

Fernandes, who was taken over from Sporting Portugal for 55 million euros in last season’s winter break, succeeds Luke Shaw as the winner. The 26-year-old midfielder eventually received 35.5 percent of the votes. Martial had to do it with 34 percent, while 10 percent of the supporters of Manchester United preferred Rashford. The top six are completed by Mason Greenwood (8.3 percent), Aaron Wan-Bissaka (3.8 percent) and Harry Maguire (2.4 percent).

“Of course you want to win prizes for the club and the supporters, but individual prizes are also very special”, comments Fernandes on the Manchester United website. “You can also say that you don’t care, but for a player such a prize is very important. It always gives a good feeling, there’s no doubt about that. I love it and I want to win many more prizes with this club. The fans just deserve it.”

Fernandes has already been elected Player of the Month four times by Manchester United fans, in February, March, June and August. Only in July, the prize went to another player, namely Greenwood. The winter buyout so far came to 12 goals and 8 assists in 22 duels on behalf of the English record champion. Especially in the English media, Fernandes is seen as one of the best acquisitions of Manchester United in recent years.
