Fenerbahçe had to accept a defeat against Olympiacos. In Greece, Ismael Kartal's team lost 3-2 due to goals from Konstantinos Fortounis, Stefan Jovetic and Chiquinho. Dusan Tadic and Irfan Can Kahveci then gave Fenerbahçe a much more hopeful starting position. Jayden Oosterwolde was injured before half time with what appeared to be a serious knee injury. The return of the Conference League quarter-final takes place in a week.

Ayoub El Kaabi was Olympiacos' deepest striker. The Moroccan was supported at his back by Jovetic. Fenerbahçe also had some big names at the kick-off. Edin Dzeko was the designated man to ensure the Turkish goals and Tadic, Oosterwolde and Sebastian Szymanski were also on tap. Ferdi Kadioglu started on the bench, but would come on for Oosterwolde before half time.

Dzeko got the first chance to silence the fanatical Greek supporters. A smooth counter-attack led to Tadic's possession on the left, where the Serbian passed Dzeko well. The striker tried with a nice volley, but had to watch as centre-back David Carmo stuck out his foot and prevented the ball from flying towards the far corner. Moments later, Dzeko managed to score a shot on goal, to which goalie Konstantinos Tzolakis had an answer.

Olympiacos proved particularly effective in the subsequent phase. Caglar Söyüncü took far too long to get away and saw his pass touched by Georgios Masouras. The ball landed perfectly at the feet of Fortounis, who tried his luck with a clean shot into the far corner: 1-0. Olympiacos came into the match better after that goal and became dangerous through Carmo, who saw Dominik Livakovic make a good save.

Livakovic was beaten for the second time moments later. Fortounis seemed to be preparing to shoot, but instead had a wonderful through ball to Jovetic. The Montenegrin was not offside due to Söyüncü's late step and finished in the short corner: 2-0. Fenerbahçe came close twice in the closing stages of the first half. First of all, Kahveci shot a free kick just wide, a little later Rade Krunic met Tzolakis.

Just after the break, another defensive error created another excellent opportunity for Olympiacos. El Kaabi regained possession and, after a cutting move, came face to face with Livakovic, who prevented the Moroccan from scoring. Fenerbahçe did not learn from its mistakes and again suffered childish loss of ball. This time Miha Zajc simply surrendered, allowing Chiquinho to continue and finish in the far corner: 3-0.

Fenerbahçe had little to show for it, although Szymanski should have made it 3-1. Kahveci brought the ball to the Pole, who missed an opportunity by heading wide. Kahveci later claimed a handball from Chiquinho in the box in the next dangerous moment, but his protests went nowhere. Moments later, the Turks were awarded a penalty after a clumsy tackle by Panagiotis Retsos on Bright Osayi-Samuel. Tadic scored the penalty flawlessly: 3-1.

The diptych was completely revived twenty minutes before the end. Kadioglu passed from the left to Szymanski, who made a very clever pass to Kahveci. The Turkish international remained calm and worked the ball into the far corner: 3-2. At the other end, Carmo soon had a great opportunity to head the ball, which he squandered by heading over. Thus, the initiative remained with Fenerbahçe, which almost leveled through Szymanski. The ex-Feyenoord player shot just wide. Olympiacos held out and will travel to Istanbul next week with a minimal lead.
