FC Groningen has brought in Lucas Gomes transfer-free, as it became clear on Monday afternoon. The only eighteen-year-old attacker most recently played for FC Porto. Gomes has signed a contract in Groningen for one year, with the option of another season at the pride of the north. The intention is that the brand new acquisition will initially join the Under 21 team of the club.

“I would like to further develop and improve myself at FC Groningen”, explains Gomes after signing the signatures and the presentation. “I want to get the most out of myself and I think Groningen is the right place. I hope to make steps towards the first selection soon.” Gomes had been on Groningen’s list for some time, which subsequently invited him for an internship. In it, the young striker made a sufficient impression on head of youth scouting Arno de Jong.

“I see in Lucas an inquisitive footballer who we think can make a good contribution to the Under-21 and has the potential to grow into our main squad,” De Jong predicts about Gomes. “He is very strong on the ball with the power to outplay a man, with his good depth Lucas is very dangerous in front of goal and always looking for goals.”

Gomes is a left-footed attacker who can be used both centrally and on the flanks. Born in Brazil and raised in Sweden, the player went through the youth academy of Malmö FF and came to Porto at the age of sixteen. At the top club from Portugal, he played his matches in the Under 19 team. Gomes played youth internationals for Portugal and Sweden and it has recently become known that he wants to play for the Scandinavian country from now on.
