FC Emmen booked an important victory in the Kitchen Champion Division on Saturday evening. On a visit to Excelsior, the team of trainer Dick Lukkien was 0-1 too strong. A used penalty by Jeroen Veldmate made the decision in the 73rd minute of play. Thanks to the three-pointer, the Drenthe are in second place in the ranking with 48 points. Volendam is still the leader of the list with 52 points, while Excelsior, which has played a match more often, occupies fourth position with 43 points.
The spectators in the Van Donge & De Roo Stadium were presented with a mixed first half in which the Rotterdam team slightly had the upper hand. A missed chance by Rui Mendes and a nice save by goalkeeper Michael Brouwer, among other things, prevented the home team from taking the lead in the first quarter of the game. Emmen held back somewhat on the level and would only burn out in the second act.

Although they did not shine in the opening phase of the second half, the match was broken open more than fifteen minutes before the end. Jari Vlak skilfully cut in from the right and delivered the ball to the edge of the penalty area for Peter van Ooijen. The latter seemed not to be touched and to kick himself into the ground, but referee Richard Martens pointed resolutely to the penalty spot. Veldmate took responsibility and shot the penalty kick hard through the bottom of the bar: 0-1.
In the remainder of the game, the Emmen had a few more chances to expand the score, but a second goal would not fall. The visitors did hit the post twice. After a bad ball on Sven Nieuwpoort, who also had a miserable assumption, substitute Mart Lieder was able to take over and go straight to goalkeeper Stijn van Gassel. However, Lieder hit the post via the closing post, after which Ole ter Haar Romeny also hit the aluminum from the rebound.
