The father of Go Ahead Eagles captain Bas Kuipers passed away on Sunday. The club announced this on Monday. Kuipers’ father was hit last week with a double brain haemorrhage. The captain of the Eagles told last Saturday after the home game against sc Heerenveen (1-1) what had happened to his father in conversation with Hans Kraay Jr. ESPN.

“It’s been a difficult week for me,” the left back started emotionally. “My father had two brain haemorrhages on Wednesday, the last of which was fatal. His body is still there, but his brain is no longer working and the doctors can’t do anything for him anymore. It has been a tough week for me. ” Kuipers indicated that he wanted to play against Heerenveen because he got a lot of strength from that.

“My dad was a big fan. He loved coming to watch and he loved the Eagles”, the left-back continued. “He loved being here and that’s why I decided to play. I can’t hold his hand all the time. I think he knows it’s good. I think he just wanted me to be here.” René Hake, the trainer of Go Ahead Eagles, received a message from his captain a few days before the game and that went through marrow and bone.

“Kuipers already texted me at night”, said the coach. “The next morning we talked about it and he told us how everything went. That really goes to the bone. I left a lot to him. This was very hard for all of us. It’s very sad, but it makes you think about life.”
