Atlético Madrid qualified for the quarter-finals of the Copa del Rey on Thursday evening. Coach Diego Simeone's team was too strong for city rivals and arch-rival Real Madrid after extra time: 4-2. Antoine Griezmann, who was invisible for almost the entire match, scored his 175th goal in the Atlético shirt in extra time.
FC Barcelona, Real Mallorca, Sevilla, Real Sociedad, Celta de Vigo, Athletic Club and Girona had already qualified for the last eight of the Spanish cup tournament and so it was up to Atlético and Real to decide who would complete the quarter-finals.

The first achievement of the match came from the foot of Jude Bellingham. The midfielder fought past two opponents, gated Axel Witsel and hit the ball hard via the underside of the crossbar. The rebound was not spent on Vinícius Júnior.
The second danger also came from Carlo Ancelotti's team. Rodrygo and Vinícius fired on the enemy goal, but saw Jan Oblak come to the rescue. Atlético struck five minutes before half-time. Antonio Rüdiger unfortunately extended the ball to Samuel Lino, who was able to finish from close range: 1-0.
While Atlético thought they would go into halftime with a minimal lead, Real leveled the score in injury time of the first half. Oblak came out of his goal on a turning free kick from Luka Modric, but, to the surprise of his defenders, hit the ball into his own goal: 1-1.

Things are not going well at both clubs. At 1-0 Rüdiger made a mistake, at 1-1 it was Oblak and now also at 2-1 things are not going very well ??#ZiggoSport #CopaDelRey #AtletiRealMadrid pic.twitter.com/OPzCWj4vtG— Ziggo Sport Voetbal (@ZS_Voetbal) January 18, 2024
Immediately after the break it was Vinícius again who appeared dangerously in front of the enemy goal. The winger tried with a fiery shot in the short corner, but found Oblak in his way. Atlético was sharp in front of the goal.
After about an hour of play, a misunderstanding arose between Rüdiger and reserve goalkeeper Andriy Lunin, after which Alvaro Morata gratefully took advantage: 2-1. Real then hit the crossbar through Rodrygo and came alongside through Joselu. The substitute headed home on a pass from Bellingham: 2-2.

Both teams had opportunities to decide the game in the absolute final phase, but were unable to do so, meaning extra time had to provide a solution. Atlético proved to be too strong due to a beautiful solo by Griezmann and a goal by Rodrigo Riquelme on a pass from Memphis Depay.
