Derksen would find it ethically irresponsible if Marc Overmars chooses to go to Newcastle United. Since the takeover of Newcastle by a very rich investment fund from Saudi Arabia, Ajax’s director of football affairs has been associated with a departure to the Magpies. After Valentijn Driessen wrote earlier today in The Telegraph that it would not surprise him if Overmars leaves, Driessen repeats his statements on Friday evening during Veronica Inside. The former winger’s ‘flirting’ with the English surprised Derksen.

“What struck me in your column today is that Overmars would be open to a transfer to Newcastle United, because he only earns 700,000 euros a year,” Derksen starts. “And then I think: the food bank is in full swing. I understand, because those guys work in a totally crazy world. But if you earn 700,000 euros at Ajax, I think that is a good salary for his position. Look, it would be a sausage for the Newcastle supporters. There’s a serial killer coming. They just care about bringing in money.”

“I think that people with full mental faculties should think twice,” the analyst continues. “Do I think players are going to say ‘no’ right away? No of course not. But neither do trainers. Dick Advocaat and Bert van Marwijk are going there in a minute. And Cor Pot too”, concludes Derksen, who is supplemented by Driessen: “Overmars will also go there soon.”

“He earns a top salary, but I believe Marcel Brands earns 3.5 million euros at Everton,” said the journalist, who is convinced that Overmars is certainly interested in a departure to Newcastle. “I think there’s a pool of three names or something, and if Overmars is chosen from that, he’ll go there. Of course he thinks this is great, because he then thinks: I can build a club from the ground up into a world club. Money is of course no longer a problem there,” says Driessen.
