Harry Maguire may leave Manchester United next summer, reports the Guardian. The 29-year-old defender is hardly in the starting lineup under manager Erik ten Hag, while he was still captain when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was at the helm in Manchester. The Red Devils According to the English newspaper, take into account that Maguire will yield less than the 87 million euros he cost in 2019.

A possible departure of Maguire is part of the ‘reconstruction’ of Ten Hag. With this, the Dutchman hopes to get the club back in the top of the Premier League. The Guardian reports that Ten Hag is satisfied with Maguire’s professionalism, but that the lack of speed is one of the Englishman’s problems. By selling Maguire, Ten Hag hopes to get someone who can increase the quality of the defense and compete with Raphaël Varane and Lisandro Martínez.

Those are the central defenders that Ten Hag usually deploys in his starting eleven. Maguire made only nine appearances for United this season, partly due to a hamstring injury. He was in the starting lineup five times. In the Premier League game with Aston Villa (3-1 defeat) last Sunday, Victor Lindelof was preferred over Maguire to replace the injured Varane.

Maguire, who will play with England at the World Cup in the coming weeks, still has a contract with United until mid-2025, with an option for another year. Incidentally, he is not the only player who is allowed to leave Ten Hag at the number five of the Premier League. Midfielder Fred’s contract expires in mid-2023, and according to the Guardian United are not expected to renew the contract.
