FC Emmen has secured promotion to the Eredivisie on Friday evening. Thanks to a 0-1 victory at FC Dordrecht, Dick Lukkien’s men are sure of at least second place in the Kitchen Champion Division and will return to the highest level within one season. Emmen started the season dramatically with only one point from the first five games, but from that moment it turned out to be by far the most stable team in the Kitchen Champion Division. Saturday evening there will be a big party in Emmen on the Raadhuisplein, where there is room for about 15,000 visitors.

The Emmen championship match was frequently disturbed by a spectator who had brought a whistle to the Riwal Hoogwerkers Stadium. Despite requests from the stadium speaker, the annoying supporter continued to do so, after which referee Erwin Blank had had enough after 70 minutes and stopped the game for a while. After the small interruption, the match could be completed without any problems.

FC Emmen missed great opportunities in the first ten minutes via Ole Romeny and Rui Mendes and then got away with a spectacular overhead kick by Stijn Meijer, which Michael Brouwer could make harmless. Yet it was mainly the Drenthe who caused danger, including through headers from Romeny and Reda Kharchouch. A mistake in the defense at Dordrecht gave Emmen the opening goal in the last minute of the first half. A long ball from behind from Oussama El Azzouzi shot through, after which Rui Mendes outwitted Liam Bossin with a handy lob: 0-1.

Immediately after the break, both Emmen and Dordrecht were close to a goal in a busy penalty area, but both times the ball did not go in. Keziah Veendorp had to pull the emergency brake in the 76th minute to block a counter. Emmen’s right back received his second yellow card for this, after he had already collected his first six minutes earlier. Azzeddine Toufiqui could have closed the game twice for Emmen, but did not succeed. With ten men, the visitors held their ground fairly easily.
