Eintracht Frankfurt was able to book a handsome 0-1 away win at Olympique Marseille on Tuesday evening. Jesper Lindström became the match winner with the only goal of the game, giving the Germans sporting revenge for the misbehavior of the Marseille fans in the city and in the stadium. It is not the first time that the fans of Marseille misbehave in a European context, because last year it was also in the diptych with Feyenoord in the Conference League.

Marseille started tonight with Sead Kolasinac as central defender as Chancel Mbemba was still suspended for his red card in the first group game against Tottenham Hotspur (2-0 loss). Up front Alexis Sanchez was the striker, while Dimitri Payet had to create danger from the left. At Frankfurt Mario Götze was back in the field from the first whistle. The creative midfielder has been an undisputed basic player at PSV since his arrival from PSV that Adler.

In the early stages of the game, Marseille in particular was the team that showed attacking intentions. Via Sanchez, the French top club was close in the thirteenth minute, but the Chilean star player saw his attempt go wide of Kevin Trapp’s goal. The Germans eventually took the lead in the Stade Vélodrome just before half-time against the ratio. Jesper Lindström actually got the ball at his feet by accident, after which he shot it without hesitation with his left directly under goalkeeper Pau López: 0-1.

After the break Lindström was close to 0-2, but through López’s glove his effort ended up on the crossbar. Gradually Marseille started to increase the pressure. The French got the greatest chance in the seventieth minute via substitute Luis Suárez, who received the ball on a silver platter from Cengiz Ünder, but produced an easy prey for Trapp with a roller. Ten minutes before the final whistle, Franfurt seemed to decide the match via Japan’s Daichi Kamada, but the goal was disallowed due to offside. Nevertheless, the Germans managed to hold on and take the three points in Group D to Frankfurt. It was also Frankfurt’s first ever win in the Champions League.

The match was marred in the second half when Marseille fans fired off fireworks in the Frankfurt branch, but the match was ultimately not abandoned. Since Monday it has been going wild with disturbances in the southern French city. After the riots in Nice last week between supporters of OGC Nice and FC Köln, the French police hoped to keep it under control this week, but Marseille fans in particular have been unstoppable since the team fell behind on Tuesday evening.
