Donny van de Beek will no longer play for Manchester United this season, Erik ten Hag confirmed during the press conference leading up to the Manchester Derby. Van de Beek was injured against Bournemouth and had to be replaced on the stroke of half time. Studies have shown that the midfielder no longer has to count on playing minutes this season. Ten Hag further commented during the press conference on Wout Weghorst, whose arrival is almost complete. However, the derby comes too soon for him.

Van de Beek was seriously injured after 42 minutes against Bournemouth during an unfortunate collision with Marcos Senesi and had to be replaced. The midfielder seemed to overextend his knee. Ten Hag could not say much about the seriousness of the injury immediately after the match, but announced during the press conference on Friday that he would no longer count on Van de Beek this season. Van de Beek’s share is therefore limited to seven Premier League matches this season, two of which as a basic player.

“It’s terrible if you get such a serious injury during the season,” says Ten Hag. “But in the long run it looks really good. I’m counting on him again at the start of the new season.” Van de Beek still has a contract with United until mid-2025. The club also has an option to extend the contract by one year. The former Ajax player was hired for six months at Everton last January, but he also suffered injuries there and only played in seven Premier League games.

Weghorst
Weghorst is also not there against City. For the striker, who will be rented from Burnley for the next six months, the duel with the great arch-rival comes too soon. Weghorst arrived in Manchester on Thursday to undergo his medical examination. Although everything seems to be done, official confirmation from United is still awaited. “We are close, but he will not be available tomorrow,” said Ten Hag. Diogo Dalot is also unavailable. Anthony Martial seems to be reconnecting. The Manchester Derby kicks off at 1.30pm on Saturday.
