Borussia Dortmund failed to win on Saturday afternoon when they visited FC Augsburg. The meeting ended 1-1. Ermedin Demirovic opened the scoring, after which Donyell Malen put the final score on the board in the first half. The draw means Dortmund remains fifth in the Bundesliga for the time being. Augsburg is tenth.
Dortmund's starting eleven had been changed in four places compared to last week's Champions League match with Paris Saint-Germain (1-1). The suspended Mats Hummels was replaced in central defense by Nico Schlotterbeck on Saturday. Furthermore, Malen was on the right wing as a replacement for the injured Karim Adeyemi, and Thomas Meunier and Emre Can were preferred to Marius Wolf and Salih Özcan. There was a starting spot for Jeffrey Gouweleeuw at Augsburg.
Both teams had some chances in the opening phase of the match. For example, former FC Twente player Fredrik Jensen shot over after Niklas Süle lost the ball, and attempts by Marco Reus and Rami Bensebaini on the other side of the field went wide.
Midway through the first half, it was Augsburg that opened the scoring. Left back Mads Pedersen delivered a long ball from behind, after which Demirovic outplayed his direct opponent Schlotterbeck and could only go to Gregor Kobel. Face to face with the goalkeeper, the Bosnian did not fail: 1-0.
Dortmund looked for an answer, and it came ten minutes before half-time. Malen entered into a combination with Niclas Füllkrug, got the ball back through a heel and slid the ball in from the edge of the penalty area: 1-1. His fifth goal of this Bundesliga season.

Just after half-time, Augsburg was dangerous a number of times through Phillip Tietz, but he failed to get the ball into the goal three times. There was also a threat on the other side of the field. Füllkrug and Malen shot just wide, and Samuel Bamba also had his sights not focused: his header also missed the target.
In the final phase, both teams still claimed victory, although Dortmund had the most chances. The best went to Füllkrug, but his spectacular effort ended up on the post via goalkeeper Finn Dahmen. Therefore, both teams had to settle for a point.
