Memphis Depay is currently unpopular with Barcelona. On September 22, Depay was injured in the Nations League match between the Netherlands and Poland. Since then, the attacker has not played for his country or club and missed the duels with Athletic Club, Bayern Munich, Valencia and Viktoria Plzen. Not being able to play in the last few games is what has caused the most discontent at Barcelona, as Depay’s hamstring injury should normally have recovered after five weeks.

If Depay no longer plays games for Barcelona, there is less chance that he will get a backlash and participation in the World Cup would therefore be almost certain for the attack leader of the Dutch. Barca are reportedly already satisfied that Depay will no longer play for his club before the World Cup. The competition matches against Almería and Osasuna will therefore probably also pass by the former PSV player, which means that Depay will have to start the World Cup without a match rhythm. The the Dutch squad opens the tournament in more than two weeks with the game against Senegal and later also plays against Ecuador and host country Qatar.
