Borussia Dortmund’s 4-0 defeat to Ajax in the Champions League could have consequences for the future of Erling Braut Haaland, writes BILD. According to the German newspaper, the heavy loss in the Johan Cruijff ArenA will cause a ‘headache’ for the 21-year-old Norwegian striker. This may ensure that Haaland wants to take the next step in his career next summer.

It should be no secret that Haaland has the clubs for picking. BILD counts Real Madrid, Paris St.-Germain, Manchester City and Chelsea among the current candidates for the striker. His contract with Borussia Dortmund, which runs until mid-2024, contains a surrender clause of 75 million euros for next summer. That does not necessarily mean that Haaland will also make a top transfer in six months, but last Tuesday’s historic defeat can contribute to that.

Borussia Dortmund suffered its biggest defeat ever in a Champions League context in Amsterdam and Haaland would say that according to BILD have infuriated. The striker – for now good for thirteen goals and four assists in ten official games this season – will now wonder, in the words of the German newspaper, whether he can win trophies with Borussia Dortmund. A ‘flight’ to a European superpower in the summer of 2022 is therefore far from ruled out.

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel flirted with the arrival of Haaland earlier this week. “We have talked about Haaland a number of times, including during the last transfer window. But it seemed unrealistic and unfeasible. We talk about it regularly, of course. He is a fantastic player and it is clear that he is a very important player for Borussia Dortmund,” said Tuchel, who sees Haaland play with Romelu Lukaku. “I wouldn’t have a problem with it. I don’t think we’re very close to Haaland’s arrival at the moment, but we’ll see what happens in the coming weeks.”
