Bayern Munich released a statement on Thursday about the absence of Julian Nagelsmann. The club already reported on Wednesday evening that the coach had to miss the Champions League match in Lisbon against Benfica (0-4) because of ‘flu complaints’. A day later, however, it became known that Nagelsmann was affected by the corona virus.

Nagelsmann tested positive for the coronavirus, despite being fully vaccinated of the Rekordmeister know through the club’s website. The 34-year-old coach will return to Munich “separately from the team in a medical plane” and “go into home isolation”, according to Bayern.

The former trainer of TSG Hoffenheim and RB Leipzig began to feel unwell in the players’ hotel before the match with the Portuguese and as a precaution did not travel with the player group to the Estádio da Luz. On the bench, assistants Dino Toppmöller and Xaver Zembrod took over from Nagelsmann, along with analyst Benjamin Glück.

During the game, the Bayern coaching team was in constant contact with Nagelsmann. “The coach prepared us very well for the game, as he always does,” said Toppmöller after the game. “It was a lot of fun in this unknown role. The guys did a sensational job.” It is still unknown how long the Bundesliga leader will have to miss Nagelsmann. The match against his old employer Hoffenheim on Saturday comes in any case too early.
