Norwich City has appointed Dean Smith as its new head coach, the club announced through its official channels. Smith, who was recently sacked from Aston Villa, will succeed Daniel Farke at Norwich, who was sacked shortly after the 1-2 win at Brentford. Frank Lampard was in the picture with the relegation candidate for a long time, but the clubless trainer has thanked the English media for the position.
Norwich, the last of the Premier League with five points from eleven games, confirmed Smith’s appointment on Monday morning. The fifty-year-old trainer has signed a contract until the summer of 2024. The ex-trainer of Brentford and Walsall, among others, is assisted at his new club by assistant coach Craig Shakespeare.
Smith’s appointment comes just eight days after his resignation from Aston Villa, where he has been succeeded by Steven Gerrard. “It’s been a stormy week, but I’m happy to be back at Norwich City in the Premier League,” he told his new employer’s club website. Maintenance at the highest level will be the big goal at Norwich.
“We are delighted with the appointment of Dean as our new head coach,” said sporting director Stuart Webber. “I have been an admirer of his work for some time and he was a long-term target from the time we had to look for a new trainer. He immediately indicated that he is ready.” On Saturday 20 November, Smith will face Norwich City for the first time in their home game against Southampton. On December 14, Smith will face Aston Villa.
