It was restless at De Vijverberg on Wednesday evening after De Graafschap missed promotion to the Eredivisie due to a 0-0 draw against Helmond Sport. The Telegraph and the Gelderlander write that the riot police had to intervene, while destruction was also done around the stadium. Martin Mos, chairman of De Graafschap, takes a fierce position on Twitter against the ‘bastards’ who caused the unrest.

“At home, phew, lost sporty, ok, afterwards treated to stones, stone glasses etc, my taxi windows disappeared! nice that football with non football fans !! Please do not stain this beautiful sport like that! You bastards, and tomorrow I’ll find some of you !!! ”, Mos wrote on Twitter just before 2:30 AM. The responses refer to the actions of the ‘agitated’ police. “It will all be, but bobbing through the taxi windows is going too far for me”, the chairman of De Graafschap responds.

Several hundred fans followed, according to The Telegraph the game from behind the stands. When the crowd increased towards the final signal, it was decided to block the road towards the main entrance with fences. The Helmond Sport team bus was held up for a while and employees had to ‘stay inside or around the stadium for their own safety’. De Gelderlander writes that the police have asked several times if everyone wanted to go home.

When that did not happen, the riot police decided to intervene to clear the site. A group of about a hundred supporters sought confrontation with the riot police, causing torches, stones, glass and fireworks to be thrown. The riot police deployed dogs and batons. According to the regional newspaper, local residents are ‘furious’ with the supporters in question. After missing out on direct promotion, De Graafschap must earn an Eredivisie ticket via the play-offs, in which Roda JC Kerkrade will be the first opponent next Saturday.
