Danny Makkelie has been appointed by UEFA for Monday night’s England v Germany match in the Nations League. As a result, the 39-year-old arbitrator is once again in charge of a big game: last week he was still responsible for Bayern Munich – Barcelona in the Champions League.

Wembley is not unfamiliar territory for Makkelie, who also refereed the eighth and semi-finals of the European Championship in that stadium last summer. In the game between England and Denmark, the Dutchman pointed to the spot after a questionable foul by Joakim Maehle and Mathias Jensen on Raheem Sterling, which brought him much criticism outside the English borders.

The referee has whistled ten games so far this season, drawing 34 yellow cards, sending a player off the field twice and pointing to the spot four times. The game at Wembley next Monday between England and Germany is the last game in the group stage of the Nations League. The English will first face Italy on Friday. The team of manager Gareth Southgate is currently last in the group.
