Cristiano Ronaldo is currently on his way to England to speak with Manchester United about his future, the well-informed reports The Athletic. The 37-year-old superstar is expected in Manchester on Monday evening, after he informed his club from a distance that he wanted to leave. The position of the English superpower is unchanged: Ronaldo cannot leave.

Ronaldo missed the entire Asian-Australian preparation tour that Manchester United completed in recent weeks. The Portuguese is preparing to speak face-to-face with Erik ten Hag in the coming days, who is still counting on his services for the 2022/23 season. It is still unclear whether Ronaldo will also train with the selection on Tuesday. That would be the first time since May. The attacker is still in prison for one year.

Ronaldo has been absent throughout the preparation, officially ‘for personal/family reasons’. The Athletic repeats in his reporting that the top scorer has indicated internally that he wants to leave, in order to pursue his dream of a sixth Champions League win. Manchester United have been sentenced to play in the Europa League after sixth place last season.

Ronaldo’s return at Old Trafford is seen as a positive sign. Sources around the case suggest according to The Athletic that it is increasingly likely that Ronaldo will stay at United, but the situation is still unclear. United’s players were released on Monday after they landed from Australia. On Tuesday, the squad will meet in Manchester for training before the last two games of the preseason (against Atlético Madrid and Rayo Vallecano).
