Benfica goes one step further to bring in Mario Götze. According to the Portuguese Record the club wants to tempt the attacking midfielder to make a switch by promising him shirt number 10. In that case, the German midfielder would again play under trainer Roger Schmidt, who will almost certainly be the new head coach. According to reports, Benfica is willing to pay three to four million euros.

Where the Portuguese A Bola previously mentioned Benfica’s interest in the creative midfielder, know Recordnow to report that the Portuguese are even willing to go as far as to promise number 10 to Götze. Benfica has the jersey number available again after Luca Waldschmidt’s departure to VfL Wolfsburg. The promise comes from the club’s president, Rui Costa. The club legend played for Benfica itself for several years with the same jersey number, and sees the German as a perfect candidate to follow in his footsteps.

Götze still has a continuous contract until 2024 in Eindhoven. The German sowed in an interview with Sports Illustrated in March already doubts about his future. “I still have in mind that I would like to win the Champions League. I would prefer to play in Italy or Spain, but the Premier League also appeals to me,” said the 63-time German international at the time. According to the Eindhovens Dagblad and Football International PSV, however, want to do everything they can to keep Götze.

There are ‘significant obstacles’ that could make a transfer from Götze to Lisbon more difficult. For example, he has a continuous contract until mid-2024, although it is said to contain a limited lump sum of three to four million euros. He also earns a good salary. A Bola talked about more than two million euros a year, though it denied General Newspaper that in 2020. Football International previously spoke of an annual amount of approximately three million euros.
