Antonio Conte disagrees with the words of Josep Guardiola, who stated that after Tottenham Hotspur’s sensational victory against Manchester City (2-3) last Saturday that the Spurs excellent counter. Thanks to a 95th-minute goal from Harry Kane, the Conte side handed the Premier League leaders its first league defeat since October 30.

After the game, Guardiola humbled himself and praised Tottenham’s tactics, which City were no match for. “After they got behind, they defended so far back in their own half and so compact – it was unbelievable. They don’t lose the ball with Harry Kane and have running people with Heung-Min Son and Dejan Kulusevski. I think we played well. We have created many opportunities. I can’t say anything bad about the team, but it was a tough game.”

The Spanish coach said he was not surprised by the North London team’s play. “They played as I expected. They were good in the build-up and created a lot of space to counter, but in general we had an answer to this and played a good game. Everyone knows what Kane is capable of. After falling behind early, we created a lot of chances within ten to fifteen minutes.”

The statement that Tottenham played on the counterattack did not go down well with Conte. The Tottenham manager posted on his Instagram account images of the three goals against the Citizens and captioned it: “Counters?!? Maybe not…”, followed by three crying emojis. Conte showed after the game that he was satisfied that the attacking tactics paid off. “I said before the game that Manchester City would have the ball for 65 to 70 minutes, so we had to be good defensively. But our first thought was to attack.”
