At various matches in the Eredivisie, the sudden death of Jody Lukoki is commemorated on Wednesday evening. The winger played in the Netherlands for Ajax, FC Twente, SC Cambuur and PEC Zwolle. Some duels are played with mourning bands. A minute of silence is also observed.

At FC Twente, the club where Lukoki was most recently under contract, former teammates pay tribute to the attacker prior to the duel with FC Groningen. On Tuesday the club from Enschede organized a meeting where the management and trainer Ron Jans reflected on the death of Lukoki. “This is so terrible. I’m devastated,” Jans responded in The Telegraph† “It is terrible that someone dies so young and he also leaves behind a daughter. It is very sad.”

The death of the Lukoki is also commemorated in the Johan Cruijff ArenA. Ajax, the club where he played between 2010 and 2014 and made his professional football debut, wears mourning bands in the championship match against sc Heerenveen. Mourning bands are also worn at PEC Zwolle (out at Sparta Rotterdam) and SC Cambuur (at home against Willem II). Lukoki was leased by Ajax to Cambuur and made the definitive switch to PEC Zwolle in 2014. A minute of silence will also be held at the Ajax and Cambuur matches.

According to reports from the General Newspaper Lukoki died after a violent argument with relatives. Initially, nothing was known about his cause of death, but according to the newspaper, the footballer took ‘a big blow’ at a party. Once he got home, he decided to go to the hospital due to extreme head and knee pain, where his health went downhill fast. His death was confirmed by his management on Monday.
